REVIEWS

Even more funny, more witty and more cynical than the first opus, "Papa or Maman 2" is a fantastic playground for Laurent Laffite and Marina Foïs. Ouest France

A sequel is always a perilous exercise: after the effect of surprise is gone, one must surpass itself not to disappoint. The challenge is met here. Incredible situations, visual gags and insults follow each other at a frantic pace. Marilyne Letertre, LCI

The sequel to Martin Bourboulon's comedy is even more exhilarating. Nathalie Simon, Le Figaro

Laurent Lafitte and Marina Fois are back as two Frenchies who love to hate each other — and even their children — in Martin Bourboulon’s risqué family comedy. Jordan Mintzer, Hollywood reporter

They are back!

The worst parents in history are back for our pleasure in this outrageous comedy! And luckily you don’t need to have met them at the SFFF last year to enjoy them this year. A little recap will suffice. Last year, we were introduced to gynecologist Vincent (Laurent Lafitte, Number One Fan - SFFF 2015, Elle) and construction manager Florence (Marina Foïs, Polisse - SFFF 2012), a once happily married couple who went to insane extremes to lose custody of their three kids amidst a rocky separation, only to wind up in each other’s arms, which, as we learned in the last scene, resulted in a fourth child.

In the sequel, two years have passed. Florence and Vincent have divorced. But they can’t quite separate and they live, seemingly in good harmony, directly across the street from one another. They share custody of their kids who go freely from one house to the other. Vincent has a younger athletic girlfriend, Bénédicte (Sara Giraudeau) and Florence has found love with Edouard, a millionaire genius (Jonathan Cohen). Their life is picture-perfect… at least until jealousy kicks in. It is time for the game between the former spouses to resume.

The script is hilarious and owes much to the absolute comical and physical chemistry between the two leads. Lafitte’s comic timing has always been impeccable and here again, he is on point as a man who has it all but can’t accept that his ex-wife can have it all, too. Fois is also terrific as a woman who pretends she is happier than she really is. Nicole Garcia, director of this year's From the Land of the Moon, appears in a cameo as Florence's mother.

Like Full Speed, playing this year at the SFFF, it is considered a family friendly comedy in France but would be rated R in the U.S. for strong language. If you don't mind the language, bring your teenagers, they'll laugh so much they won't even mind the subtitles. It is a great way to introduce younger people to foreign cinema!
