REVIEWS

Perhaps the world is finally ready for a lesbian romance as direct and unapologetic as “Summertime” Peter Debruge - Variety

The story’s anchored by strong performances from Belgian star Cécile de France ("The Kid With a Bike", "Hereafter") and French singer-turned-actress Izia Higelin ("Mauvaise fille"), who have a natural chemistry that’s not only credible but actually infectious. Boyd van Hoeij - Hollywood Reporter

This personal and moving way of filming naked bodies… is reminiscent in places of the first brave films of Chantal Akerman.
Muriel Del Don - Cineuropa

Corsini’s Sublime "Summertime" Captures All the Contours of a Love Affair. Alex Ramon - Pop Matters

An engaging celebration of a time when traditional values were under siege and individuals were obliged to decide whether they would stand up and be counted. Alan Hunter - Screen Daily

It’s a fascinating look at how far women have come over the last four decades in their fight for equality and the changes in the way society views homosexuality. French Cinema Review

A lesbian romance set in 1970's France, in a time awash with changing cultural and social mores. But long-held traditions are never easy to overcome, especially for a country girl. From director Catherine Corsini (Three Worlds - SFFF 2013) and starring the luminous Cécile de France (Chinese Puzzle - SFFF 2014, A Secret - SFFF 2008 - High Tension, SFFF 2008) in the performance of her career.

Center of France, 1971. After her secret girlfriend breaks up with her to get married, Delphine (Izïa Higelin, Samba - SFFF 2015), a farmer's only daughter, moves to Paris. There, she meets Carole (Cécile de France), a Parisian actively involved in the feminist movement who lives with her activist boyfriend. Smitten by Carole (and who wouldn't be when she is portrayed by Cécile de France?) Delphine joins her women's lib group and soon, the two women are having a torrid affair.

When Delphine's father has a stroke, she must go back home to run the farm with her mother (an impressive Noémie Lvovsky, Jacky in the Kingdom of Women - SFFF 2015, House of Pleasures – SFFF 2012, The French Kissers - SFFF 2010, and also with a cameo in The Sweet Escape playing at this year’s Festival). Carole, desperately in love, abandons her boyfriend to "pay a visit," as Delphine puts it to her mother. But, sooner or later, Delphine will have to decide: coming out to her family, or losing Carole.

The on-screen chemistry between the solar Cécile de France and the lunar Izïa Higelin is so infectious that you can't help but rooting for them, even as it becomes clear that the odds are not in their favor...
