Joseph (Alexis Manenti, The Man Who Could Not Remain Silent - 2025 Winter Shorts Fest) is one of the last coastal shepherds in Corsica, a French island in the Mediterranean Sea. One day, he receives a visit from the mafia. They covet his piece of land overlooking the sea for a real estate project and are not used to taking no for an answer. After all, why do goats need such a magnificent view? Despite the pressure and against everyone's advice, Joseph refuses to sell.
When he unwittingly kills one of the men sent to intimidate him, he has no choice but to go into hiding. Pursued by the police and the mafia, he becomes the victim of a merciless manhunt from the southern to the northern reaches of Corsica. As the days go by, the legend of Joseph, nicknamed “The Mohican” (an homage to James Fenimore Cooper’s The Last of the Mohicans) spreads across the entire island, embodying a resistance previously deemed impossible.

With The Mohican, Frédéric Farrucci transports us to the bright sun of Corsica, known as “L’île de Beauté” (the Island of Beauty). But under the beauty violence lurks. The Mohican is a genuine western, set in wild landscapes, with a lone hero, gunfire, intense car chases, and a final deadly duel… Farrucci shows how folktales are created, through counter-culture (these days, social media), songs, and graffiti on walls.

Corsica has many similarities to Sicily, a traditionally poor, agrarian world, controlled by organized crime, and now a major tourist destination. Although a work of fiction, The Mohican presents a situation that is unfortunately very real. As recently as March 2025, Pierre Alessandri, a Corsican farmer known for his anti-mafia position, was murdered on his farm with two bullets in the back. No one has been arrested for his murder.
