Mikado (Félix Moati, Some Like it Veiled, Gaspard at the Wedding - SFFF 2018) and Laetitia (Vimala Pons, also in The Ties That Bind Us, playing this year at the SFFF), two former foster youths, share an alternative lifestyle with their home-schooled children, Nuage (13, newcomer Patience Munchenbach) and Zéphir (7). They live out of a van, always on the road and limit their social interactions.
One day, breaking their own rule of keeping to themselves, they stop to help Vincent (Ramzy Bedia, The (In)famous Youssef Salem - SFFF 2023) whose car has broken down on the side of the road. In the process, they damage their van. A part has to be ordered and Vincent, feeling responsible, agrees to let them camp on his property while they wait.
Can three weeks in the same place be enough to give the family a taste of normalcy and challenge their way of life? Vincent is a widowed teacher living alone with his teenage daughter Théa (Saul Benchetrit) in a comfortable country house, full of books that Nuage devours. She is happy to find a friend of her age in Théa, while Laetitia and Zéphir enjoy unwinding in a safe and peaceful environment. They seem ready to settle down, but Mikado feels a trap closing in on them. Insecure and impulsive, he is set to appear in court for phone harassment of one of his abusive former foster families and wants to protect his children from the foster system at all costs.
After the hilarious comedy The (In)famous Youssef Salem, one of the most successful screenings of the 2023 SFFF, director Baya Kasmi comes back with a tender and luminous family drama, full of love and compassion for her flawed but endearing characters. |
