A touching and nuanced drama about unlikely friendships, forgiveness, and the need for change, The Midwife centers around the newly resurfaced relationship between Claire (Catherine Frot, César winner for Best Actress in Marguerite - Closing Night SFFF 2016), a passionate but tightly wound midwife and lonely single mother, and Béatrice (the ultimate French star, Catherine Deneuve), a life-long kept woman, free-spirited, and estranged ex-girlfriend of Claire’s father. Though polar opposites in almost every way, the two come to rely on each other to cope with the unusual circumstance that brings them together in this sharp character study from French filmmaker Martin Provost (Séraphine - SFFF 2009).

Martin Provost’s The Midwife once again proves that French filmmakers know how to treat actresses of a certain age, offering exciting roles to the two Catherines, who clearly enjoy their characters and their scenes together. You will hardly recognize Frot from her performance in Marguerite. And Deneuve truly shines in her fearless portrayal of a vulgar, gambling, and boozing wreck of a woman who realizes that she doesn’t have a lot to show after years of hard and ego-centric living. Who would have thought that after a career spanning sixty years, Catherine Deneuve could still surprise us?!

The Midwife is funny, sad, and moving all at the same time. Just like life.
