REVIEWS

A riveting, impossible-to-shake masterwork. Durga Chew-Bose, Globe and Mail

As much a study of solitude, intimacy and otherworldly longings as it is a contemporary ghost story, the film is both genuinely scary and psychologically serious. Colin Covert, Minneapolis Star Tribune

I can't explain everything I saw in this film, but I was entertained and enthralled by every second of it. Richard Roeper, Chicago Sun-Times

The movie is a quietly profound portrait of grief and loss, and perhaps Assayas' most surprising attempt yet to grapple with the anxieties of modern life ... Justin Chang, Los Angeles Times

It works in two realms: as an engrossing ghost story and a drama that addresses profound matters of life and death. Pat Padua, Washington Post

What gives the story its spooky resonance, however, is a confluence between the unmoored exploration of the protagonist's spiritualism and the international rootlessness of the model's world. J.R. Jones, Chicago Reader

An incredible work that will continue to haunt you, long after it is over. Peter Sobczynski, RogerEbert.com

Olivier Assayas, the internationally-acclaimed director of Clouds of Sils MariaSummer Hours, and Demonlover (SFFF 2005), returns with this ethereal and mysterious ghost story, shot in France, almost entirely in English and starring American actress Kristen Stewart.

Maureen (Stewart) is a young American working in Paris as a high-fashion personal shopper to a movie star, Kyra. She doesn’t like her superficial job but it pays well, and allows her to stay in Paris, as she awaits for a sign from her recently deceased twin brother, Lewis. Every day she goes from one luxury shop to another searching for the perfect outfit for Kyra, while every night she haunts Lewis’ isolated home, determined to make contact with him. One day, she receives a mysterious text message on her cell phone...

After Clouds of Sils Maria in 2014, Personal Shopper is the second collaboration between Assayas and Stewart, and they are a match made in heaven. Stewart's delicate game and Assayas' atmospheric style perfectly fit this elegant and philosophical ghost story.
