Summer, 1946. The Cousteau family, Jacques-Yves (Lambert Wilson, A Man and His Cow - SFFF 2016), his wife Simone (our favorite Audrey Tautou in a fantastic part) and their two boys Jean-Michel, and the younger, more daring, and clearly their dad’s favorite, Philippe (finely portrayed as an adult by the wonderful Pierre Niney, Frantz - SFFF Mini Fest 2016), live in paradise, in their beautiful house by the Mediterranean sea. But Jacques-Yves is not content. He lives and breathes adventure and believes absolutely in the virtues of progress. With his invention, the aqualung (modern scuba gear), he discovered a new world underwater, and made some money. Now he wants to explore this world. He is a man with big dreams that he is willing to fulfill at all cost, dragging his family with him for better or for worse.

The Odyssey, based on books about Cousteau as well as testimonies gathered by director Jerôme Salle, is a spectacular blockbuster that took five months to film, including shooting in the frozen waters of Antarctica and with sharks in the Bahamas. It is also the intimate portrait of a complex man, Jacques-Yves Cousteau, “JYC,” Le Commandant Cousteau. He is passionate and charismatic, and  enchanted an entire generation with his documentaries revealing the mysteries beneath the waves. He is also flawed with megalomania, limitless ambitions, and few concerns for other people and, for most of his career, the environment. Cousteau’s ties to Big Oil and his lack of interest in preserving the oceans he loved so much were the main reasons Cousteau and Philippe, who himself became a famed environmentalist documentarian, grew estranged, until their mutual passion for exploration brought them back together in the common cause of saving the planet. Right before tragedy struck.

With its breathtaking visuals, The Odyssey is going to look so phenomenal on the Esquire IMAX's giant screen that we are showing it twice!
