REVIEWS

A terrible, profound and intelligent story. Christophe Foltzer, Ecran Large

To embody this father-son relationship, director Morgan Simon called on Nathan Willcocks and Kévin Azaïs. The two actors impress with their raw and sober acting. Catherine Balle, Le Parisien

Young Morgan Simon'sremarkable first film features Kevin Azaïs as a young man in conflict with his father. A harsh and powerful portrait that marks the birth of an artist to follow closely. Mehdi Omaïs, LCI

Morgan Simon brings us an astonishing, energetic and very promising debut film about the latent conflict between a father and son. Fabien Lemercier, Cineuropa

"A Taste of Ink" may pepper its ordinary domestic setting with body art and a screeching post-punk soundtrack, but what really stands out is a precise script and fine performances which turn a family drama into a punchy narrative. Fionnuala Halligan, Screen Daily

On stage, post-punk singer Vincent (Kévin Azaïs, Love at First Fight - SFFF 2015) is an explosion of animal fury, convulsing with emotional intensity. But back at home, with the mic unplugged, Vincent is more inclined to let his tattoos do all the talking. Indeed, Vincent isn’t as tough as his wild stage presence or fierce tattoos might initially suggest. Since his mother’s recent death, Vincent’s feelings of alienation and disorientation have only increased. At 24, with a day job that won’t pay for his upkeep, he lives like roommates with his unaffectionate father, Hervé (Nathan Willcocks, who will be presenting the film in person). Everything changes when Julia (Monia Chokri, seen also in Heal the Living, Closing Film of this year’s SFFF), Hervé 's new, younger girlfriend, starts spending the night in their apartment. Vincent’s anger, jealousy, and grief are ready to blow. Something has got to give to break this poisonous domestic circle.

A true revelation, A Taste of Ink keeps its audience on the edge. At its core, it is about a young man coping with the death of his mother, longing for his father’s approval – a longing that is obviously never going to be satisfied - and the increasingly urgent need to strike out on his own. This punchy but sensitive father/son drama set in the Paris underground music scene marks the debut of a filmmaker to watch, Morgan Simon. Simon is not a stranger to the SFFF, his short film, Try to Die Young, was presented at the SFFF Winter Shorts 2016. His latest short, Wake the Dead will be presented prior to A Taste of Ink.
