REVIEWS

Gemma Bovery is very much centered around (Luchini's) performance, offering up more laughs than any Flaubert-inspired work thus far, with Luchini delivering his one-liners in French, English and hilarious Franglais. Jordan Mintzer - The Hollywood Reporter

Arterton is captivating as Gemma, but Luchini steals the film as the magnifique Joubert, his lust for Gemma often rendered innocent (or impotent) by his wonderful, Buster Keaton-esque deadpan face. Ellen Becker - Filmlink (Australia)

The lovely Gemma Bovery (Gemma Arterton, Tamara Drewe, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time) and her husband Charles (Jason Flemyng) move from London to a charming, decrepit old farmhouse in the small village in Normandy where Flaubert wrote his masterpiece, Madame Bovary, a century earlier.

Their welcoming neighbor, a disillusioned Parisian executive turned baker and Flaubert expert, Martin Joubert (Fabrice Luchini, In the House – SFFF 2013, The Women on the 6th Floor – SFFF 2011), becomes entranced with Gemma and sets out to be her guide and mentor in her new surroundings.

Gemma Bovery’s name is so similar to Flaubert’s doomed heroine, Emma Bovary, and Martin is so bored, that it doesn't take long for his wild imagination to draw dangerous parallels between the literary and real life women.  He soon insinuates himself into Gemma's life to try to save her from the tragic fate he is convinced awaits her.

Director Anne Fontaine's clever adaptation of Posy Simmonds’ graphic novel Gemma Bovery is at once a cheeky literary mash-up, a sensuous romance, a witty feminist commentary and a celebration of French provincial life.

In case you are unfamiliar with Flaubert’s story, or if you need a refresher, Gemma Bovery will be paired with Claude Chabrol’s stunning 1991 classic, Madame Bovary.
