REVIEWS

Easily the most innocent, family-friendly ode to hallucinogenic drug use since "Puff the Magic Dragon", "Attila Marcel" marks writer-director Sylvain Chomet’s charming first foray into live action feature filmmaking. Andrew Barker - Variety

It's impossible not to be charmed by the off-kilter comedy, and by Chomet's penchant for slyly juxtaposing a highly stylized real world with an even more stylized imaginary world. Brendan Kelly - Montreal Gazette

A live-action feature about memories that beautifully evokes films and songs from the past. Boyd Van Hoeij - Hollywod Reporter

Paul (Guillaume Gouix) is a thirty-something piano prodigy, still living a childlike life with his overly protective aunts (riotously portrayed by Nouvelle Vague muse Bernadette Lafont–in her last role–and Hélène Vincent). The two old aristocrats have raised him since his parents died, in mysterious circumstances, when he was a toddler. Since then, Paul has never uttered a word. Haunted by his lost memories, Paul spends his life at the grand piano in his aunts' living room, and in his aunts’ dance studio, where he works as an accompanist.
One day, he meets Madame Proust (Anne Le Ny), his eccentric neighbor. This aptly named, ukulele playing hippie brews a unique herbal tea that can bring back the most repressed memories. Naturally, Madame Proust also bakes delicious madeleines that mask the tea's bitterness... With Proust's help, will Paul finally make peace with his past, and find the key to embrace his own future?

After The Triplets of Belleville and The Illusionist, Sylvain Chomet's first live action film, Attila Marcel, continues to display his fascination with the Two Jacques: Tati and Demy. The film is a tender farce seasoned with dreamlike musical numbers. It makes a great pairing with Jacques Demy’s Donkey Skin, also in this year’s SFFF program. Treat yourself to a "Double Musical Feature" on Saturday, June 21!
